The Sovraintendenza ai Beni culturale del Comune di Roma, together with the AMA has created the Centro di Documentazione del Cimitero di Verano at the entrance to the Quadriportico. The works of art of the Cimitero di Verano appears similar to a kind of museum in the open. It has no equal because of the amount and the peculiarities of its works – a priceless value from the historical/artistic point of view as well as of the history of the 18th and 19th Century.
This is a heritage to sstudy and preserve as a precious part of what has been left to us and which we citizens have to personally look after, so that future generations may also appreciate it.
The following may be seen in the Centro di Documentazione:
- images of the paintings of Filippo Severati (1819 – 1892) in enamel on lavic stone, a precious example of a singular pictorial technique and representations of the 18th Century middle class.
- films of the Archilvio Storico dell’Istituto Luce, a witness to the history of Verano from 1931 to the sixties and, in particular, the tragic event of the 1943 bombing.
- photographic tables of the volume ‘Cimitero di Verano in Roma - Cappelle, tombe e Lapidi’ (1915) by the architect Corrado Cianferoni.
The Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali del Comune di Roma has for a long time been working on promoting the Cimitero Verano through a detailed project in the form of publications called ‘I percorsi della memoria’ and cataloging the tombs. The latter, already terminated for the Quadriportico, will be gradually extended to all the other areas including the Pincetto, already being pre-catalogued, in collaboration with AMA.
This activity is considered indispensable to give information and protection systems which cannot be done without, to preserve this funerary heritage since, as can be understood, it will be subject to further use.
A program has also been developed for restoring monuments belonging to the Comune, such as a recent intervention on the Monument to Generale Roselli, a hero of the Risorgimento. Another on the sculptures at the Quadriportico entrance and the statue of the Redeemer. For a long time, collaboration with other institutions, specialized in preservation has existed for the purpose of creating a kind of ‘vade-mecum’. This is based on specific research to give information concerning future maintenance and restoration. The purpose is that all the owners of the architectonic structures of the Cimitero di Verano may promote the ideal of preserving this indispensable heritage.
