The mausoleum, built on a circular plan, takes up two levels: the upper one covered by a cupola, with a frontal portico now collapsed. The lower one has a ring-shaped corridor and three rooms running under the portico.
Certainly, the lower floor must have served as a funerary chamber, as indicated by the recovery of large sarcophagus fragments. The use of the upper room is complicated since its frescoes are now largely destroyed.
Because of the presence of marks and seals, the structure can be placed in the Diocletian age or later. The basilica was excavated in 1959-1960, when its form and function were clarified. Based on a subdivided plan, it has three naves, the central one being the largest.
The excavations of 1984 revealed the interior, and around the exterior of the basilica’s perimeter, a series of burial places from the medieval period were found. At the eastern extremity of the park, along via Rovigno d’Istria, a small two-story catacomb was found in 1953. Unclear whether it was a pagan or Christian structure, the catacomb has burial niches for sepulchres and only one pair of arcosoli.
