Built in 80 AD by Tito, these baths occupied the area just northeast of the Colosseo, in the III region next to the Domus Aurea (they may have been built over a part of the latter).
The spaces previously occupied by Nerone were put to public use, following Flavio’s policies.
The complex has been well documented, thanks to drawings by Andrea Palladio (late 1500’s). Located on the southern slopes of the Oppio hills, it must have had a flight of steps to lead from the Colosseo to the baths. They had a moderately-sized central area, around which the other rooms were arranged.
The excavations carried out by the Comune di Roma, between 1986 and 1991, revealed a number of wall structures forming a small part of the complex. The buildings had to follow the slope of the hill and were certainly built on several floors.
The structures seemed to have been used many times and there are traces of later uses and considerable stealth.
At least three building stages can be observed: the original, the one following the age of Adriano and a restoration and extension period dating back to the early third century.
