During excavations at the end of the thirties (for the reconstruction of the Church of S. Rita and the palazzetto of Flaminio Ponzio), various brickwork structures were discovered at the piazza Campitelli. They belonged to an insula and the remains of a portico of small dimensions (the maximum height may have been 7m), ran along the eastern and northern sides of the Tempio di Bellona and continued towards the Tempio di Apollo as far as can be seen.
The portico had a double row of pilasters with semi-columns towards the outside and pilaster strips joined by semicircular arcades towards the inside and covered by a roof. The pilasters were partly in peperino and partly in brickwork, covered with stucco simulating the grooves of the columns and moldings. The floor was covered with travertine slabs.
The portico, built at the end of the Republican Age, was changed several times during the era of Domiziano. The arches were partly closed by structures in different types of works to make space inside the building, between the latter and the Portico di Bellona.
The construction may have originally been part of the system of porticos at the Foro Olitorio.
