THE CENTRAL TEMPLE
A temple is located in the center between two others, underneath the church of S. Nicola in Carcere, probably the most recent of the three.
The largest temple (30m x 15m), was hexastyle, peripteral and in the ionic style, with a triple row of columns along the front and a double row on the back.
The temple was built on a cement foundation with a flight of steps in front and an altar placed at the center.
The remains can be seen underneath the church, near the apse as well as a few columns in the front.
The temple was probably dedicated to Juno Sospita, who protected births. It was built in the early 2nd c. BC by Cornelio Cetego and reconstructed in the first century BC. It was restored again during the ages of Augusto and Adriano.
THE NORTHERN TEMPLE
Located on the right of S. Nicola in Carcere, the ionic temple - the northernmost of the three which were part of the Foro Holitorium (the vegetable market) - is the best preserved. It was also hex style, peripteral and sine postico with triple rows of columns along the front and one colonnade on the long sides (seven columns remain on one side and two on the other), but there are none at the back.
It was large enough (26m x 15m)and had a flight of steps in front.
It was built on a cement podium of medium height covered in travertine blocks. The bases and capitals of the columns were in peperino, while the architrave and the frieze were in Travertine. The temple was probably dedicated to Giano, mentioned in ancient sources as "iuxta Theatrum Marcelli" (located at the Theater of Marcellus).
Built in the Republican Age by C. Duilio during the first Punic war, it was rebuilt in the early first century BC (the remains that can be seen date back to this period) and then restored many times during the ages of Augusto, Tiberio, and Adriano.
