Ninfeo di Colle Oppio

In 1936, when the Parco di Traiano sul Colle Oppio was being restored, a building was found about 6-8m under the ground, which can now be accessed from the small pavilion at the corner of viale Monte Oppio.

The vestibule can be entered from a modern spiral staircase which then leads to a courtyard.

The building is composed of two separate parts: an atrium with a colonnade at the north, and at the south a series of rooms with niches. Part of the mosaic decorations in glass paste and frescoed plaster are still in existence.

The structure has been defined as a nymphaeum, a place where water runs (the pipe holes can still be seen) and intended for rest and meditation. The style of the marks on the brickwork date the structure to the period of Traiano, but these constructions were probably in the area which belonged to a section of Nerone’s Domus Aurea before.

What can now be seen is the result of a complex but massive restoration, performed when the building was found, which neither impedes nor distorts its comprehension.
