Ninfeo di via Amba Aradam

The entrance to the monument can now be reached from the archive of the Vicariato, or from a manhole cover along the street. The nymphaeum is located at 7.5m below street level, half way between the communal and Vatican property.

In 1962, during works for the construction of the Vicariato, the remains of a small nymphaeum were discovered on the corner between via dei Laterani and via Amba Aradam. The building was composed of a central room with an apse and two lesser rooms on either side and followed the plan of a basilica.

The first phase of the complex goes back to the Giulio-Claudia age. Remnants of mosaic in glass paste are also attributed to this period.

At a later date, probably during the third century AD, the rooms were slightly modified and decorated with pictures having floral motifs, some of which are still in good condition.
