Ipogeo di Via Livenza

In 1923, the hypogeum was discovered during the construction of a small building about 250 m. from the Aurelian wall.

The monument is located in the area of the Salario graveyard. From the via Salaria Vetus towards north-west, a side-street going northwards branches off flanking the hypogeum. Most of the buildings recovered on the site appeared to be used as a cemetary, except for ruins of a private residence situated more to the south, and a furnace, undoubtedly related to the burial ground.

This large underground construction appears to be a typically funerary monument, although it has yet been proved.

The hypogeum was partially destroyed when a modern construction was built. Today, only a small trapezoidal part of the northern side is preserved.

Originally the underground building, accessible through a flight of steps only partly preserved, revealed an elongated plan (21m x 7m) and an apse on the short southern side.

The hall, constructed in opus vittatum, was divided into two areas, separated by two travertine steps framed by pilasters in the walls, and were located on different levels.

The southern and eastern walls on the side of the hypogeum revealed two doors, one in front of the other. The first led to a still unexplored room, the second, still visible and flanked by two long, narrow windows, is embedded in the rock. The back wall on the northern side has three adjacent arches.

A large rectangular bath, lined with a type of earthen mixture (cocciopesto) and bipedal at the bottom, is situated under the central arch. The arch has two marble barriers which rest on travertine bases.

The bath was provided by a system for transporting water. It cascaded down a pipe made of terracotta and flowed out of an opening which was connected to a drainage channel dug in volcanic rock. A decorated wall with a niche can be found above the bath.
