Tomba dipinta

The sepulchral building was discovered in 1971 inside the Zoological Garden, during the construction of the "monkey village".

The tomb can now be entered by a much damaged trap door. There is still a small wall of tuff blocks, with applications in brick slightly jutting out. These were used as ledges and supported a layer of tiles which, on the opposite side, hung over the tufa wall thus creating four loculae one above the other.

Two further loculae, dug into the tuff, can still be seen. They are arranged parallel and there is a frescoed lunette above. The painting is delicate and the style is slightly realistic using a chiaroscuro technique. An aquatic landscape is depicted, populated by ducks in various lively poses, arranged in perfect symmetry at the sides of a fountain having a square basin. Water pours from a vase on the top of a small column.

According to the painting style and the many tiles with stamps, the monument has surely been attributed to the Severian age (around 210 AD).
