The collection of antique scuptures comprising works of Egyptian, Assyrian, Sumerian, Cypriot, Etruscan, Greek and Roman art, was donated by Giovanni Barracco to the Comune di Roma in 1902.
In an atmosphere of great changes towards the end of the 18th Century, Giovanni Barracco, an illuminated collector, managed to put together this impressive collection through purchases from the antique market and recover works from archeological excavations carried out during the building of Roma Capitale.
The collection, comprising 380 examples all regularly shown, offers a complete enough panorama of the development of sculpture in those antique civilizations developing around the Mediterranean basin and number unique examples of their kind.
